DISCUSSION

Leonardo Davinci‘s anatomical drawing THE VITRUVIAN MAN heralded the age where the perfection of man was central to all things and encouraged progress and excellence in the individual and in society. The assertion of the centrality of the human soul in the order of creation is an idea I challenge.

“Progress powered by a need for comfort creates a culture where innocence becomes denial: a precursor to evil. In the belief that we own life and earth we relinquish our role as custodian of the planet. Individual existence seen as a biological right and not an honor (to be part of the diversity of species) lends to ingrained bigotry. Our civilization that rolled out from the age of enlightenment is becoming dark again. We measured time and conquered matter and now we need to refine what it means to have power and to feel central.

My performance resolves itself in the enveloping power and poetry of nature. We are nature; not separate from it or superior to it. THE MEASURE OF MAN is a contemplation of the imperfection of man and a reminder of the supremacy of nature.”

I am bound spread eagle on a vertical
7 Ft. diameter, rotating circle.
Beneath me is a square trough
filled with 2 inches of salt water.
I, with the circle, rotate like a clock, and as I slowly rotate I begin to bleed oil.
It runs over my body and drips into the water.
The performance runs for 30 minutes, a full rotation.
As I slowly rotate I begin to bleed oil.

I wear narrow lengths of white, gauze fabric concealing tubing that pumps black, mock-crude oil.
Oil oozes, leeks, bleeds; the white garment becomes a black X.
Halfway through, when I am upside down, pre-cut hair falls from my head and lands in the water.
All painters know hair absorbs and moves oil.
Hair has become a viable and poetic solution for cleaning the ocean of our oil spills.
The square trough beneath me is lined with watercolor paper.
The salt water, oil and hair dry to become a painting.
The performance resolves in the enveloping
power and poetry of nature.
We are quick to blame environmental disasters on government and corporations, then jump into shop-till-you-drop-mode
in the name of God & family & love.

MISSION STATEMENT

I am returning to my roots as a painter, where I first discovered my talent, lost my identity/my sense of separation in process - painting portraits. For the next 2 years I am only painting portraits. Abstraction & performance art lend to my feeling immortal now I am mother I feel human, more grounded & more vulnerable than ever and I am pulled to dive in.

I will open an exhibITion MUDBIRD, Dec 9 2015 at TBG (my studio/gallery). I PREPARE the space for my new show & my new direction.

A zen studio to paint commissions in & bring my subjects into & also the option to rent a part of it out as event space gives me a solid base to generate a reliable income for me & my baby.

All the signs look good. I have started all the preliminary work to transform my space and life. I am excited to be re-creating my space to provide a secure future for my son which also allows me to continue making art. Your contribution would enable me to transition to the next phase of my arts practice.
